Wiz firmware updates

driver updates

Windows Driver – for XP thru Win8, 32/64-bit, BioExplorer & BioEra, & all Wiz and Pendant products

All products interfacing to Windows operating system need a Windows driver. Updates to the driver are rare. BioEra on AndroidTablets does not need a driver – the App will automatically find the Wiz product.

The preferred method for installing the wireless dongle driver is to allow Windows ‘New Hardware Found’ wizard to execute automatically to find the driver in Windows (on-line) central repository. If the computer is not on-line or there are problems, then run this auto-installing program.  For further details and fault finding, please see FAQ for details on installation procedures and fault finding for the driver.

Wiz firmware updates

Wiz Firmware updates – via Windows machines

Firmware files are downloaded from this page to a directory on your computer. Then there are several mechanisms to download the file into the Wiz. The Wiz needs to be placed into Program Mode to allow the download to proceed. Use the Mode button to sequence to a Mode where the Mode light no longer blinks – this is Mode 0, or Program Mode.

Firmware uploads can be done over USB or wireless, however USB is likely to be faster and more reliable.

Note that firmware files are specific to individual models in the Wiz range. Files not intended for a product will not be accepted and the transfer will timeout.

Note that intermediate upgrades are not required. If you have missed an upgrade, you can simply download the latest firmware version listed.

1. Using BioExplorer

firmware_updateFrom the BioExplorer Status Bar, select the “BioExplorer” drop down menu, then choose “Devices”. If not already loaded and activated with the tick box, then choose a new device, and “PN_Wiz” from the list of products. Highlight the  “Wiz” device, choose Properties, then, if this is a new installation, in the Serial Port Tab select the COM port assigned to the driver by Windows. Then choose the  “PN Wiz” tab. In this window,  click “Upload Firmware” and locate the file that you have downloaded from this site. Simply selecting the file will cause the firmware file download to commence. Progress is tracked in the “PN Wiz” tab and after 30 seconds or so “SUCCESS” is indicated. The Wiz will re-boot and starting to transmit in Mode 2 automatically.

Should the upload fail (rare for USB connections), the Wiz will start to transmit in Mode 1 and you will need to reset Program Mode and try again..

Note that is same window allows the current version of the firmware to be inspected by clicking “Get About Info”. In the example here the Q-wiz version is version 5: “Qwz05x”. Version upgrades are only required if your device has a lower version number.

Summarising,

  • open bioexplorer
  • connect wiz to usb port
  • go to bioexplorer devices
  • click add, if pn wiz not listed
  • select pn wiz, , make sure box is ticked, click ok
  • in device proporties window click on serial port tab,
  • then click on the drop down to select a com port
  • click “apply”
  • click “pn wiz” tab
  • put Wiz in Programming Mode by cycling thru the Modes until the transmit light goes off (blinking on occasionally
  • in BioExplorer, select “Upload Firmware”
  • navigate to where the upgrade file is located and select it.
  • Click “open” to initiate upload. Progress Bar will advance. Upload takes about 45 seconds.
  • Last line of Upload should be “SUCCEEDED”
  • Click OK and close Window.
  • Wiz will start transmitting automatically in Mode 2. If it doesn’t Upload was not successful

2. Using BioEra

Bioera comes in two versions – Windows and Android. Designs are created in the Windows version (the Trial Version is unrestricted to create designs) and this is the version needed to do firmware uploads.

  • Place the Wiz in Program Mode.
  • Load a ‘BioEra for Windows’ Wiz design.
  • In the design view, right click on the “PN_Wiz” object and select “Advanced Properties”.
  • You will see an item “Firmware File Path”. Locate the firmware file to upload to the Wiz.
  • Then click “Upload Firmware”.
  • Progress of the file upload is not indicated, however as above, success will be indicated by the Wiz starting to transmit in Mode 2.

3. Firmware Uploader utility

If unable to use BioExplorer or BioEra, then use this utility.

This standalone utility needs to be set to the correct serial port properties:

  • 38400 Baud
  • 8 bit
  • 1 start bit, 1 stop bit
  • No parity
  • the Com Port assigned to the Wiz driver by Windows.

Then it is simply a matter of finding and selecting the files downloaded from this site.
